Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia 2016: Full house for the Public Presentation

Last Friday, 11th March, was marked by the public presentation of the next three editions of Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia, a regatta that counts with the High Sponsorship of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ALRAA).

The event was brightened by the presence of Her Excellency the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Dra. Ana Luís, the Regional Assistant Secretary for the Parlamentary Affairs, Isabel Rodrigues, in representation of His Excellency the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, and the Mayor of Horta, José Leonardo Silva.

The President of Clube Naval da Horta Directive Board, José Decq Mora, started the presentation session, remembering the idea brought in last year’s presentation, by the President of ALRAA, of including all the nine Azores Islands, turning Atlantis Cup into the real Autonomy regatta.

Therefore, and after much conversation with the others nautical clubs and respective City Halls, Clube Naval da Horta is proud to announce the following model for the next three editions, for 2016, 2017 and 2018.

In 2016, year in which the Regional Autonomy turns 40, the 28th Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia will set sail for seas never sailed before, on the West Azorean Group. On the 1st stage, the group starts and arrives at Lajes das Flores, contouring Corvo Island. The 2nd stage links Lajes to Velas, in São Jorge Island. Finally, on the 3rd stage, the participants leave Velas and head to Horta, contouring Faial Island by the North side.

In 2017, the 29th Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia returns to the East Azorean Group. The 1st stage will link Ponta Delgada, in São Miguel Island, to Vila do Porto, in Santa Maria Island. The 2ª stage sets sail from Vila do Porto and returns to São Miguel, but heading to Vila Franca do Campo, from where the fleet leave with the final destination to Horta, for the 3rd stage.

2018 will also be a year to celebrate, being the 30th edition of Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia. The regatta will be centered on the Central Azorean Group. The 1st stage will link the Terceira Island ports of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória, going around Graciosa Island. On the 2nd stage the participants leave Praia da Vitória heading to Velas, in São Jorge Island, and from there they set sail for Horta, contouring Pico Island on the South side.

In 2019, it’s expected that the course of Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia returns to the last year’s model, linking the ports of Vila do Porto, Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo and Horta, in this order.

José Decq Mota enhanced the fact that, regardless of where the course may start, Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia will always finish its 3rd stage in Horta Bay, on the Official Opening Day of Sea Week, and therefore being connected to the biggest nautical festival in Portugal.

Then the Vice-President of Clube Naval da Horta, Jorge Macedo, presented the audience with much more detailed technicalities of the model for the three years of Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia.

The Mayor of Horta then took the floor to highlight the importance of this regatta and its arrival in one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Horta. Also, the Regional Assistant Secretary for the Parlamentary Affairs, Isabel Rodrigues, addressed the audience referring to the fact that this regatta pushes the name of the Region further, praising it to bigger levels.

Lastly, Her Excellency the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Dra. Ana Luís, took the floor to congratulate Clube Naval da Horta on accepting the challenge to “touch” all the Azores islands, bringing an autonomic spirit to this regatta, and also wished for good winds.

It was also displayed the promotional video of Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia (available here), after which José Decq Mota invited all the present to gather around an appetizer table, for a social moment.
